Muntjac doe,

Muntjac Doe (Muntiacus reevesi)
This species has had a severe impact on our native woodland. Unfortunately they have a feeding preference for plants that are of conservation importance, such as Bluebells, Orchids & Primulas and are capable of damaging most young tree species, particularly by fraying and contined browsing. In areas of high Muntjac density, semi natural woodland can become devoid of native ground-flora, which has serious implications for conservation of native woodlands. Careful, planned management of the muntjac populations is therefore imperative for the protection of our remaining ancient & semi-natural sites.

Deer Management

This is how we work ...

  • Through our training services we are able to select our best and most experienced deer stalkers for assistance nationally for whatever deer management strategy we need to adopt.
  • Dependant on our aims, we work as a small group, initially visiting the estate, farm or forest. We would then generate a deer management plan (DMP) based on the Deer Initiatives' template, bespoke to the specific requirements.
  • We would assess risks, and then erect highseats from which to implement control.
  • Visiting the area on a regular basis, as a team, we would selectively cull all necessary beasts, in-line with our DMP.
  • n On a bi-monthly basis we would produce a cull report for Farmer, Landowner or Forester.

Our effect (one example) …

  • We are extremely effective and this is proven by our figures and excellent professional references.
  • On one estate in South Oxon we have taken the previous deer managers cull total from approx 60 head in 2002 to +300 head last year. (increase of+400%).
  • This has resulted in an increase in carcase weight, due to a reduction in population density, and a saving of over 30 tonnes of wheat for the Game Dept, normally eaten by the resident Fallow deer herd.
